60+ Work Hours A Week...Oh My

Stress Management techniques can work great if you have a reasonable schedule and reasonable expectations on your time and energy.

But what do you do when your job culture requires you to work 60+ hours per week??

When I started working with professionals years ago, I had wonderful resources to provide them to:

  1. Increase self awareness

  2. Learn what triggers them

  3. Not judge what they observed

  4. Ground with neuroscience backed techniques

  5. Find a focus on what matters most to them so that they could feel energized to live the life they so beautifully desired

But when my high level or high stress workers kept running their schedules by me it was obvious that:

  1. There was no way to use the same techniques that everyone else uses

  2. These folks ESPECIALLY need tools… sometimes even more than the rest of us

Self-care is essential when working more than 60 hours a week, and it’s possible to maintain well-being amid a heavy schedule by building small, restorative habits into your day.

Having someone like a colleague, friend, therapist or coach can help you come up with a plan tailored to you and how your mind works. In addition, we tend to do better with accountability partners.

While I don’t insist clients meet with me weekly, some insist that they do because they’ve learned a weekly check-in slows down time long enough to be clear they are on the right path (or pivot) and get really focused on the strategies for the week ahead. That includes strategies for self care to optimize performance and honestly, enjoy the process more!

Options can include:

Taking mini breaks throughout the day tied to activities already part of the routine

Creating one morning and one evening ritual that connects us to ourselves

Planning one art (music, show, museum, etc) each month where the tickets are already bought or we’ve made plans with someone we don’t want to let down

There are many techniques that can suit even the busiest of us.

The reality is…the more intense things are in your life right now, the more critical it is to reset often. You will miss a lot if you don’t make precision moves.
