Things You Are Allowed To Say To Your Therapist

Things you are allowed to say to your therapist:

  • It hurt my feelings when you....

  • This makes me uncomfortable.

  • You didn't get that quite right.

  • What you said made me angry.

  • I don't want to talk about that.

  • This approach isn't working.

Practice self awareness and healthy communication in your sessions.

If your therapist freaks out when you hold any of these boundaries, get a new therapist. They are not emotionally mature enough to hold space for you right now.

Of course it can be tough to hear - even for trained professionals - but emotional regulation and being differentiated (being a separate person with sometimes different experiences of the same event) are signs of emotional intelligence (EQ).

Hold your therapist to this standard. You are practicing for the other relationships in your life.

That's part of what you are working toward in therapy. You got this!
